In 1937, Albert Barnes was given
the great task of ushering in a new era in British comics and even
though he didn't know it then, he was about to become the first editor
of the world's longest running comic 'The Dandy'.
It has been over seventy years
since the launch of 'The Dandy'. The first issue dated 4th December 1937
helped change the British comics landscape with its innovative design.
Gone were the broadsheet style of comics that had proceeded it and in
its place was the easier more manageable tabloid style that it borrowed
from its comics' cousin, the story paper. It was not just the size and
shape of the paper that changed but the style of the content including
the the use of speech balloons in many of its stories.
'The Dandy' number one miaowed
onto our shelves and an unsuspecting public in early December 1937
introducing 'Korky the Cat' (James Crichton) as its front page star and
hero. The first issue also saw the appearance of 'Desperate Dan',
'Hungary Horace', 'Freddy The Fearless Fly' and many more. |
