The fact that 'Desperate Dan' is the
front cover star of 'The Dandy' annual 2012 stands as
testament to not only the creativity of his creators but it
also reflects the love and affection felt by people young
and old for over seven decades.
With a
chin thought to be based on the original editor, Albert
Barnes, Desperate Dan has graced the pages of 'The Dandy'
for over seventy years. |
|
In the
last seventy five years Dan has
undergone a number of changes. Dan was originally an
outlaw, a fugitive from the law which is how he got his
'Desperate' title. However, over time Dan became a law
abiding citizen and with the help of his aunt Aggy
became a regular favourite. Many people recall Dan and
his famous 'Cow Pie' which was a giant pie with cow
horns sticking out of the pastry.
Many of the 'Desperate Dan'
storylines appeared in a time before political
correctness and in latter years many of the scripts were
toned down. The famous 'Cow Pie' disappeared from the
comic in 2004 when 'Mad Cow's Disease' became a major
issue in the British press and media. |
